When Real Estate Industry Looks Bad in the News: 4 Pieces of Mindset Advice for Agents

Every fall and spring, just before the high season of real estate kicks off, the news fills with a smattering of reports on the horrors of real estate or the naughtiness of agents themselves. Headlines like “Real Estate Agents Warned about Posting Inaccurate Home Sale Prices” or “Judge rules against reviewing complaint against McBride Real Estate Agent” tick through our feeds.

Every year.

It’s like clockwork, which is to say it’s always timed precisely, and hardly the results of a coincidence.

Why do you think that is?

Ratings. Pure and simple, it’s to get eyeballs on their websites so they can attract more ad dollars and subscribers. That’s it. 

Sensationalism sells. Fear sells. Suspicion sells. And if that means shining a spotlight of disdain on us for a few weeks every year, they’ll do it.

The challenge to real estate professionals is that it can be frustrating and discouraging to see all this negativity about the industry we love. I’ve seen too many agents become disheartened by these articles. It’s enough to make them question whether it’s even worth it to continue. It really is. Not just because of the news articles, either. This career is a fast paced, a highly demanding career that requires a person’s financial, physical, and emotional investment. The negative media just inflames whatever existing irritation is already there.

Here’s what I want to say to agents who feel discouraged or frustrated by news articles making us look bad:

  1. It will pass. The real estate spotlight really only lasts for a week or two in spring and fall, and then they shine it on another timely subject. Hang in there.

  2. Don’t sweat the small stuff. And these news pieces are often very small stuff indeed.

  3. If you’ve made a mistake – maybe the kind that are featured in the news (or maybe you’re the one in the news!) – use the opportunity to admit it, learn from it, and be better by it. The only dumb mistake is the one you don’t learn from (and repeat as a result).

  4. And, most importantly, remember your value. You bring a lot to the table, you have a lot to offer people who need to buy or sell their home. Remember your strengths and focus on those. Be aware of the news, sure, but don’t let it color the way you see your industry or worse, the way you see yourself.
